Generation No. 7

7. ASERRYL7 FLINT, JR. (ASERYL6, JONATHAN5, NATHANIEL4, NATHANIEL3, JOSEPH2, THOMAS1) was born March 26, 1807 in Roxbury, Vermont, and died May 1856 in Kinderhook, Michigan. He married SALOME SUMNER March 1830 in Middleberry, Vermont, daughter of SAMUEL SUMNER and DIADEMA GOODRICH.

Notes for ASERYL FLINT, JR.:

In the fall of 1835 Aseryl and Salome traveled with their three children, Sarah, Samuel and Salome, from Somerset, Vermont (Windham County) by way of Lake Erie to Detroit, and then by steamboat to Tecumseh, Michigan. After two weeks they continued on their way to Eckford Township, Calhoun County, Michigan. Mr. Flint bought a quarter of a section of land in Section 35, and built a log house, barns and fences. He also planed some apple seeds, which developed into fruit-bearing trees, some of which were alive in 1940.

In the early 1850's Mr. Flint heard favorable reports of farmland in Wisconsin, which had just become a state in 1848, and was preparing to move his family to that new state when one of the twin boys, Henry, fell off the fence and broke his leg. The boys, being too young to help, were sitting on the fence watching the others load the wagon for the trip. This mishap changed their plans, and not long after, Mr. Flint and an older son walked from the Clarendon Township farm to Kinderhook in Branch County looking for farmland. They had heard this farm was for sales by a minister.

Branch County records show that he bought the 230 acres in Section 9 for one thousand dollars. this farmstead remained in the family until 1970 when, after the death of Rollin Flint's grandson, Jay Fogleson (great grandson of Aseryl), it was necessary to sell the home and acreage to settle the estate.

Mr. Flint died on May 3, 1856, the result of a fall from a barn he was building, only a few years after settling on the new farm. By extreme care and perseverance Salome Flint managed to rear all thirteen children in a Christian surrounding, teaching them honesty, good citizenship and the rewards of close family ties in the tradition of her own New England upbringing, still expressed by the annual Reunion every August of her descendants. The oldest son, Samuel Azro, remained in Clarendon Township and married in 1854. His granddaughter, Sarah Flint, aged 92 in 1976, lived in his old home across the road from the original homestead.

"The Flints were mostly Methodists and the Sumners were Congregationalists", writes Sarah Jane Jones, the eldest daughter of Aseryl and Salome.

Notes for SALOME SUMNER:

Born in Middlebury, Addison County, Vermont on 2/12/1811, and married to Aseryl Flint in March 1830. She gave her heart to the Savior when 17 years of age, joining the ME church. In the fall of 1835, she with her husband and three small children came to Eckford, Michigan. The privations and hardships of pioneer life were theirs to endure. In 1851, they moved to Kinderhook, which has since been her home. Her husband died in 1856, leaving her with 13 children, 9 under 18 and 4 married. There was debt on the farm, and she had no house or barn except the old ones. She paid the debt, built a house and barn and kept the family together. With two exceptions the family are all located within a radius of six miles. When she was first thrown on her own resources, she told her children that whatever the could pay for they could have, and what they could not pay for they must do without. The first year after her husband's death she did the cooking for her large family and only used 30 pounds of sugar.
